This project is a simple demonstration of working with the <b>Current Click</b> board
based on the MCP3201 12-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) with SPI Interface.
This example demosntrates measuring the current drawn by the consumer using a shunt resistor.

Current click is s a compact and easy solution for adding current measurement in your design. It features INA196 current shunt monitor, MCP3201 12-bit ADC, MAX6106 voltage reference as well as two screw terminals. Current Click communicates with target board microcontroller via mikroBUS SPI (SDO, SCK, CS) and AN lines.

Library Description

The library covers all the necessary functions that enables the usage of the Current click board.
It offers reading from output register and calculations that result in relatively accurate current value.

Key functions:

  • uint16_t current_dataRead() - Function is used to read data from output register.
  • float current_avgData() - Function is used to calculate average raw data value.
  • float current_getCurrentData( float rShunt ) - Function is used to calculate current in mA.

Examples description

The application is composed of the three sections :

  • System Initialization - Initializes SPI module, LOG and GPIO structures, sets CS pin as output and AN pin as input.
  • Application Initialization - Initalizes SPI driver and makes an initial log.
  • Application Task - (code snippet) This is an example that shows the capabilities of the Current click board by measuring current in miliampers. Current click board can be used to safely measure current ranging from 2mA to 2048mA. It is important you need to provide the shunt of the appropriate value.
void applicationTask( )
{
    current = current_getCurrentData( _CURRENT_RSHUNT_10 );

    FloatToStr( current, logTxt );
    mikrobus_logWrite( " Current: ", _LOG_TEXT );
    mikrobus_logWrite( logTxt, _LOG_TEXT );
    mikrobus_logWrite( "mA ", _LOG_LINE );
    mikrobus_logWrite( "-----------------------", _LOG_LINE );
    Delay_ms( 1000 );
}

Other mikroE Libraries used in the example:

  • SPI
  • UART
  • Conversions

Additional notes and informations

Depending on the development board you are using, you may need USB UART clickUSB UART 2 click or RS232 click to connect to your PC, for development systems with no UART to USB interface available on the board. The terminal available in all MikroElektronika compilers, or any other terminal application of your choice, can be used to read the message.

Smart Buck Click

Smart Buck Click is the two-channel step-down DC/DC converter and regulator, with plenty of additional functions. It can provide voltage measurement at each of its two programmable voltage outputs, as well as the measurement of the current consumption. In addition, it can also provide power consumption measurements of the Click board™ itself, both at the mikroBUS™ +5V power rail, and the external voltage input terminal. Finally, there is 2kbit of EEPROM at disposal, which can be used for logging the measurements, storage of the working parameters, or any other type of general purpose data.

3D Hall click

1

3D Hall click carries the MLX90333 Triaxisâ„¢ Hall sensor, capable of detecting the position of any magnet in nearby space. It does so by being sensitive to three components of flux density (BX, BY, BZ). The board communicates with the target MCU through the mikroBUS SPI interface. 3D Hall click is designed to use a 5V power supply only.
